We see in this episode that believers are equipped for spiritual warfare, not with carnal weapons, but with mighty spiritual ones through God: the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and persistent prayer. We are to grip the Sword tightly—knowing it, while also wielding it to cast down strongholds of lies, false religions, and philosophies that oppose the knowledge of God—and bring every thought captive to Christ. Prayer is to be constant to maintain readiness in the fight, exalting God through courageous faithfulness as we complete our mission to share the gospel of grace.

As we continue our series from Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul commands believers to “stand therefore” in God’s armor: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, as we learn in this lesson, we are to take the shield of faith to quench all the enemy’s fiery darts, and the helmet of salvation to guard our minds against attacks, while keeping the hope of salvation and the gospel for the lost at the forefront. This practical armor—which is really putting on the Lord Jesus Christ—enables us to stand firm against Satan’s schemes without turning and running.

Satan, though decisively defeated at the Cross by Christ, remains dangerous, as he desperately seeks to destroy believers and God’s work. Drawing from Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28, this study describes Satan’s origin as the beautiful, exalted angel Lucifer who fell through prideful rebellion to try to be “like the Most High”—becoming the adversary who schemes against God’s people. Believers must not be ignorant of his devices but stay strong in the Lord, maintaining a consistent walk and standing firm in the armor of God.

In Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul urges believers to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might” and to “put on the whole armour of God” so they can stand against the schemes of the devil. We are reminded in this message that Satan and his demonic forces have been defeated at the Cross but continue an organized, deceptive spiritual battle to discourage, divide, deceive, and destroy Christian testimonies and effectiveness. By depending on Christ’s resurrection power, yielding to the Holy Spirit, and taking up God’s armor, believers can withstand attacks in “the evil day” and by standing firm.

In this teaching from Mark 5, Jesus encounters a violent, demon-possessed man. The demons recognize Jesus as the Son of the Most High God, beg not to be tormented or sent away, and are permitted to enter a herd of about 2,000 pigs, which then rush into the sea and drown—demonstrating Christ’s supreme authority over demonic forces. The healed man wants to follow Jesus but is sent home to testify to his friends and loved ones about the great things the Lord has done, illustrating the power available to believers who are “strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might” (Eph. 6:10).
