The Apostle Paul explains in Romans 5:1-5 about the wonderful benefits of being justified by faith, namely that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. And we can also glory in our tribulations, which ultimately strengthens a hope that does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the indwelling Holy Spirit. These truths provide deep comfort—our past is settled, our present is secure, and our future is certain—even as God uses trials to mature us and deepen our hope in Him.

In Isaiah 26:3-4, God promises to keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him because he trusts in Him. This complete, abiding peace comes from leaning on the Lord Jehovah, Who is our everlasting strength. Jesus Christ personally gives believers His own peace—not the fragile, circumstance-dependent peace the world offers—as seen when He slept peacefully in the storm and then calmed it with a word. The Apostle Paul echoes this in 2 Thessalonians 3, encouraging us to trust Christ for deep, untroubled peace that guards our hearts and minds through the trying times in life.

The psalmist of Psalm 46 proclaims that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” so His people need not fear even under the most catastrophic circumstances. This psalm contrasts the chaos and raging of the nations during the time of Tribulation judgment with the glorious hope of the Millennial Kingdom. Concluding with God’s command to “Be still, and know that I am God”—as He will be exalted among the nations—the psalm affirms that “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge,” bringing comfort and peace to believers who trust in Him amid any trouble.

In Psalm 27:1-6, David declares with bold confidence that even when the wicked attack or an army encamps against him, his heart does not fear because he trusts in God’s protection and past deliverances. David’s singular desire is to dwell in the house of the Lord all his days, where in times of trouble, the Lord hides David in the secret place of His tabernacle, and sets him high upon a rock, above his enemies. David responds with worship—offering sacrifices of joy and singing praises to the Lord—modeling the comfort, security, and confident faith available to believers who take refuge in God.

The Apostle Paul, in 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17, gives thanks to God for the Thessalonian believers, whom He chose from the beginning to salvation, through the sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth of the gospel of grace. This salvation leads to obtaining the glory of Christ at the Rapture, which is why Paul urges them to stand fast and hold to his teachings they received by word or epistle. God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, Who loved us, have given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace. Paul prayed that this truth would comfort believers’ hearts and establish them in every good work.

In Romans 8:31-39, the Apostle Paul powerfully affirms that “If God be for us, who can be against us?”—that with His own Son being delivered up for us all, God will freely give us all things. No one can successfully accuse or condemn believers because God has justified us and Christ sits at the Father’s right hand, interceding for us. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ—not tribulation, persecution, principalities, or any other creature. Instead, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, giving believers unshakable security in Christ.

The Apostle Paul, in 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, chooses to boast not in receiving revelations or in his accomplishments, but rather in his weaknesses. To keep him humble, God allowed a painful “thorn in the flesh,” and after Paul pleaded three times for its removal, the Lord answered, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Paul learned to gladly glory in his distresses and infirmities, because when he was weak, then he was strong through the power of Christ, showing us that God’s grace is always enough and that our shortcomings bring about God’s strength.

In 2 Corinthians 1:3-11, the Apostle Paul praises God as the Father of mercies, Who comforts believers in all their tribulations so they, in turn, can comfort others. Paul illustrates this through his own sufferings, explaining that as they increase, God’s consolation through Christ abounds, enabling endurance and mutual encouragement within the Body of Christ. The apostle came to trust that the God of all comfort Who delivered him in the past can deliver him day by day in the present, and would continue to deliver him in the future, until the day when he would be completely set free from the troubles of this world.
