In this episode, the Apostle Paul distinguishes between Israel’s prophetic resurrections and the mystery resurrection revealed uniquely to him for the Church, the Body of Christ. Christ’s own resurrection has guaranteed the prophetic resurrection of Israel’s saints at the Second Coming and the final resurrection of unbelievers for judgment. But in 1 Corinthians 15:51–52, Paul unveils a previously hidden truth: at the Rapture, believers of this present age—both dead and living—will be instantly changed and given glorified, immortal bodies. With this hope certain, Paul urges believers to remain steadfast, continually abounding in the Lord’s work.

In this teaching, we learn that because believers are “children of light,” we must not live with the spiritual indifference and blindness that characterizes the unbelieving world. The Apostle Paul contrasts those who are spiritually asleep—unaware of coming judgment—with believers who are called to stay awake, living with purpose and urgency because the Rapture could occur at any time. He urges Christians to protect our minds and hearts as we serve others and warn them of the coming Tribulation. Finally, Paul assures believers with the hope that God has not appointed us to wrath but to deliverance through Christ.

In this message, after describing the Rapture in 1 Thessalonians 4, the Apostle Paul turns in chapter 5 to the Day of the Lord, the period of judgment that comes after the Church is caught up to meet the Lord in the air. Paul teaches that this coming Tribulation will arrive suddenly and unexpectedly—“as a thief in the night”—bringing devastating and escalating judgments on those left behind, who will be deceived by a false cry of “peace and safety.” Paul then contrasts the unbelieving world with believers, assuring the Church that we will not enter the Tribulation because we will already be in heaven.

In this study, we learn that the Rapture is a guaranteed promise of God’s grace, revealed uniquely to the Apostle Paul, in which Christ Himself will descend from heaven to gather the Church. Paul teaches that believers who have died will rise first and then living believers will be “caught up” with them to meet the Lord in the air. The event will signal the close of the age of grace and the Church’s rescue from the coming wrath. Paul urges believers to find comfort and strength in these truths, knowing that one day the entire Body of Christ will be together with the Lord forever.

This lesson reveals that we should live every day ready for Christ’s return, as did the Thessalonians. The Apostle Paul reminds those brethren, and us, that Christ’s return “in the air” is certain and that the Church will be delivered from the coming wrath. Paul teaches that our greatest joy at the Rapture will be seeing fellow believers gathered together in the Lord’s presence, and also comforts the Thessalonians about believing loved ones who have died—explaining that their souls are already with Christ and will return with Him—meaning we can grieve those losses with hope and not despair.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, the Apostle Paul teaches about the Rapture of the Church, the Body of Christ. In this episode on verses 9-12, leading up to the Rapture, Paul gives practical instruction for how the Body is to live in light of Christ’s coming and be “Rapture ready.” While the Thessalonians eagerly awaited Christ’s return, their excitement caused some to neglect daily responsibilities, so Paul reminded them that being Rapture ready means living faithfully in everyday life, abounding in love. Paul also instructed them to be a compelling testimony—demonstrating a calm, steady faith rooted in God’s peace—set apart from the world.
