In this lesson, the Apostle Paul teaches that every believer in the Body of Christ must appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ, where our lives, motives, and service will be fully revealed and evaluated by the Lord. This judgment does not determine salvation but determines reward or loss of reward, based on whether our works were done with Christlike motives and according to the truth of grace. Knowing this coming day shaped Paul’s ambition to live a life “well pleasing” to the Lord, and it should motivate believers today to serve faithfully, recognizing that nothing done for Christ is forgotten.

We learn in this study how the Bible describes several future judgments, each applying to different groups of people. First, immediately following the Rapture of the Church, the Body of Christ, believers of this present age will appear at the Judgment Seat of Christ, not for salvation, but to receive rewards—or suffer loss of reward. Next, Israel will be regathered and judged after Christ’s Second Coming. Then the Gentile nations will be judged based on their treatment of Israel during the Tribulation. Finally, after the Millennium, unbelievers from all ages will stand at the Great White Throne, be judged by their works, and then cast into the lake of fire.

This teaching on the Great White Throne Judgment in Revelation 20 explains the final, terrifying judgment of all unbelievers, who stand before Christ. Every unsaved person—from the “small and great”—is judged according to the books that record their works and reveal their guilt, and also by the Book of Life, where their names no longer appear. After being resurrected to stand before God, both body and soul are cast into the lake of fire, the second death, an eternal separation from God with no escape. This sobering scene underscores the urgency of trusting Christ now and sharing the gospel with others.
