Esther is one of two books of the Bible named after women, with Ruth being the other. It’s fascinating to note that Esther is the only book in Scripture in which there is no explicit reference to God. But while God is not mentioned, He is still clearly at work, demonstrating His hidden providence for the nation of Israel. In this episode, we see how the deposing of the Persian queen Vashti by King Ahasuerus opened the throne for Esther, which paved the way for preserving the exiled Jews from future extinction.

Three years after Queen Vashti’s removal, the Persian king Ahasuerus accepts his servants’ plan to gather beautiful young virgins to select a new queen. In Shushan, the Jewish exile Mordecai had raised his orphaned cousin Esther as his own daughter; after royal officials select her for the harem, she is eventually crowned queen, while concealing her Jewish identity at Mordecai’s command. Later, Mordecai—now an official at the king’s gate—uncovers an assassination plot by two royal chamberlains, reports it through Esther, and has their execution recorded in the royal chronicles. The events in this episode continue to reveal God’s hidden hand of protection over the Jewish nation.

Following Queen Esther’s coronation and Mordecai’s saving of King Ahasuerus, in this episode we discover the unexpected promotion of Haman to the highest office in Persia, which brings about the command for all officials to bow and give him divine-level reverence. Mordecai, a faithful Jew and magistrate, refuses on religious grounds, enraging Haman, who learns he is Jewish and plots to annihilate Mordecai and every Jew throughout the provinces. Haman then bribes Ahasuerus to authorize an irrevocable decree to slaughter all Jews. Yet God’s unseen providence is already at work, foreshadowing Haman as a type of the future Antichrist, and the Jews’ deliverance, which is still celebrated to this day at the Feast of Purim.

This episode details Mordecai’s public mourning, after learning of Haman’s irreversible decree to annihilate every Jew throughout the provinces. Queen Esther becomes alarmed at Mordecai’s grief and later learns of Haman’s evil plot. Mordecai urges Esther to approach the king and plead for her people, and warns that silence will not exempt her. Esther responds with resolve: she will go and make her desperate plea to the king, albeit unsummoned, which was punishable by death. This shift from fear to faith marks the story’s turning point, as Esther has been precisely positioned by God to thwart Haman’s genocidal plan and preserve His people.

In this episode, we see how Queen Esther courageously stands uninvited in the inner court of the palace; when King Ahasuerus sees her, he extends the golden scepter, which spares her life. Esther calmly invites him and Haman to a banquet that very day, at which she promises to disclose her petition at a second banquet with them both the following day, building suspense while God’s providence works behind the scenes. Honored at the first banquet, Haman departs it elated, yet is instantly filled with rage upon seeing Mordecai’s refusal to stand or bow in his presence. Haman’s wife and friends urge him to erect the gallows for Mordecai’s public impalement, which Haman eagerly orders, setting the stage for his own downfall.

This episode opens as a sleepless King Ahasuerus has the royal chronicles read and discovers that Mordecai had exposed an assassination plot five years earlier yet received no reward; at that exact moment, Haman arrives to request Mordecai’s execution. The king instead asks Haman what should be done to recognize the man the king delights to honor. Assuming it is himself, Haman suggests the royal treatment, only to be commanded to do all of it for Mordecai. Humiliated, Haman obeys, before rushing home in deep mourning, where his wife and friends predict his certain demise, just as the king’s chamberlains arrive to escort him to Queen Esther’s second banquet—another stunning display of God’s veiled providence weaving natural events together for the Jews’ deliverance and Haman’s ruin.

In this episode, the scene opens at Queen Esther’s second banquet, where she courageously reveals to King Ahasuerus that she and her Jewish people have been “sold” to be slain and destroyed (echoing Haman’s own decree), pleading for their lives, while also subtly noting the annihilation of the Jews would result in financial loss to the empire. Enraged, the king demands to know the culprit, and Esther reveals that it’s “this wicked Haman.” As the king storms into the garden, Haman falls on Esther’s couch begging for mercy—which the returning king misinterprets as assault. After the gallows Haman built for Mordecai is pointed out to the king, he orders Haman to be impaled on it instead. Haman’s rapid descent illustrates God’s divine providence and foreshadows the Antichrist’s disgraceful end.

This episode begins on the day of Haman’s execution, during which King Ahasuerus also rewards Queen Esther with Haman’s entire estate and promotes Mordecai to chief officer by giving him the same royal signet ring that Haman once used to seal the Jews’ death decree. Although the king is unable to reverse Haman’s irrevocable edict, at Esther’s tearful plea, he authorizes Mordecai to write a counter-decree—empowering the Jews—on the very day Haman had chosen for their annihilation. Jews everywhere celebrate with gladness, feasts, and honor—another display of God’s behind-the-scenes providence turning the tables for His people’s deliverance. Not wanting to be numbered among Israel’s enemies, many Gentiles instead become proselytes to the Jewish religion.

On the day when Haman’s genocidal decree was to be executed, we see in this episode the effects of Mordecai’s counter-decree, which empowered the Jews across the provinces to assemble, defend themselves, and strike down their attackers. The Jews killed 75,000 enemies empire-wide, including Haman’s ten sons, who were publicly impaled, at Queen Esther’s request, to serve as a warning. Over the next two days, the Jews rested and celebrated, turning sorrow into joy. It was at this time that Mordecai established the annual Feast of Purim as a remembrance of how God sovereignly reversed their doom, while Mordecai himself rose to second-in-command, seeking the welfare of his people.
