Giving God Glory in Suffering – I Peter 4:16

As a teenager, my girlfriend, her parents, and I trusted Christ within days of one another. In short order, we began attending a Bible-teaching church fifty miles away. My childhood church background had been in a liberal, modernistic denomination where attendees never heard a true gospel. When my former pastor learned that I was attending a church out of town with my girlfriend’s parents, he went to their place of work, railed on them, and tried to get them fired. These were difficult times for them, but they trusted Christ, and kept attending the new church where they were growing.

When Peter wrote his first epistle to Kingdom saints, they too were enduring persecution for their growing faith. Peter encouraged them with these words: “But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evil-doer, or as a busybody…Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf” (I Peter 4:15-16). The saints to whom Peter was writing had been “scattered abroad,” throughout the known world, by persecution over their faith in the Lord Jesus as their promised Messiah (James 1:1). Unbelieving Jews, like Saul before he became the Apostle Paul, pursued them wherever they went, seeking to imprison and torture them until they renounced their faith in Christ. If they would not recant Christ, many were murdered. It was in this context that Peter instructed these saints about suffering. They were to be careful to never engage in sinful activities that would bring negative consequences. If they suffered for the sake of Christ, they were to not “be ashamed,” or shrink from their stand for our Lord. Instead, they were to respond with verbal praise, sing praises, and remain steadfast, therein bringing glory to God. Peter himself had done so when beaten and commanded to no longer speak in Christ’s name. He responded with “…rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name” (Acts 5:41). Likewise, Paul and Silas “…prayed, and sang praises” (Acts 16:25). Responding with angry words or threats would not glorify Christ, but demonstrating godliness would do so and enhance their testimony.

In every dispensation “…all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (II Timothy 3:12). Be bold in sharing Christ in a wise and godly way. When persecution comes, respond in a way that will “glorify God” (I Peter 4:16).

Ferviente amor fraternal – I Pedro 4:8

Fervent Brotherly Love – I Peter 4:8

It was my joy to be the pastor of man who was a tremendous example in fervent brotherly love. Newton frequently came to see me, constantly told me how much he loved me, showered us with gifts to demonstrate his affection, promoted our ministry, prayed for us, and overlooked our faults to see only the positive. He always acted in a way that enabled us to feel completely safe and confident in his love.

We learn from the Book of Acts and the early chapters of Revelation that Jewish believers with a Kingdom hope gathered regularly, as do we today, in local assemblies. These saints had the hope of eternal life and many things in common, but this did not mean they always peacefully coexisted. Therefore, Peter instructed these saints: “And above all things have fervent charity [or love] among yourselves; for charity shall cover the multitude of sins” (I Peter 4:8). These saints needed to realize that, as they interacted with one another, there would be nothing more important than demonstrating love toward each other. This by no means minimized the importance of sound doctrine that taught them what God expected in their daily walk. But towering even above sound doctrine was their need to demonstrate love. The Savior had told them: “By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). Without love, their testimony, and their doctrines, would be worthless before the unsaved. But when genuine love prevailed, it gave a powerful testimony that attracted others to their message. Moreover, they were not to demonstrate a shallow, “on again, off again” sort of love. They were to love one another with a “fervent” love, meaning a love that is intense and without ceasing. The Lord wanted strong, bonded relationships demonstrated by keen affection and kindness. Here’s where the rubber meets the road. When others hurt, disappointed, or angered them: “…charity shall cover the multitude of sins” (vs. 8). That simply means their love for others would overlook the offence while continuing to love the wrongdoer and demonstrate love. If they would obey these instructions, their assemblies would experience harmony and effectiveness.

The Apostle Paul likewise taught that love is the paramount thing needed in our assemblies. Without it, even with doctrinal correctness and busy activity, we are nothing and our work for Christ profits us nothing (I Corinthians 13:1-3). Today, raise God’s standard of love as the highest priority in your church.

Honra a tu esposa – I Pedro 3:7

“(I Pedro 3: 7).

Honor Your Wife – I Peter 3:7

It is with great thankfulness that I can say one of the greatest examples of a husband honoring his wife is my son-in-law, Justin. With great consistency, he is sensitive to his wife’s well-being, considerate of her wishes, loving in how he treats her, respectful of her opinions, and wise enough to regularly seek her counsel. He involves her as an equal in all aspects of family decisions and frequently puts her wishes above his own interests. Though married for years, he still takes her on date nights, and leaves her complimentary notes confirming his love. In short, he treats her like a queen. Justin is a real answer to prayer. My wife and I are very happy our daughter has this man to partner with in life.

When Peter wrote timeless principles about how a man is to treat his wife, he said: “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life…” (I Peter 3:7). The word “honour” means to value, esteem to be of the highest degree, or count precious. A man who is treating his wife properly will demonstrate that he views her as the greatest blessing in his life, after his eternal salvation. He will protect her, make her his priority, show her great respect, and cultivate a good relationship with her. In order to dwell with her “according to knowledge,” he will seek to find out what pleases her and what displeases her, then act accordingly to provide an environment where she is happy and content. This will mean more than providing material things; it will mean providing spiritual encouragement and cooperation coupled with love, consideration, and tenderness. He will seek to shoulder the bulk of the stresses of life, knowing she is “the weaker vessel.” That does not mean she is lesser than the man, only that God enables men to bear these burdens better. It is the proper role of the man to shield her when possible. This is how “real men” treat their wives. Beyond peace, harmony, and a stable relationship, treating one’s wife this way also insures that their “…prayers [will] be not hindered” (vs. 7b).

Men, we encourage you to act like a gentleman toward your wife, demonstrate to her that she is your most valued blessing from God, and honor her with great respect. Doing so will pay high dividends here and in eternity.

Una esposa piadosa – I Pedro 3:1-6

A Godly Wife – I Peter 3:1-6

My best friend throughout college had a remarkably godly mother. She had a quiet inner strength that exuded a spiritual influence and stability that positively influenced her family. She was a “guide [to] the house” (I Timothy 5:14) as she gently encouraged family devotions, gave godly biblical counsel, and constantly prayed for her family. “She [also] opened her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness” (Proverbs 31:26). She was married to a man who was certainly saved, yet he had strangely stubborn, foolish, and often ungodly tendencies. Nonetheless, this woman remained a constant godly woman and submissive wife. Given that her circumstances were far from ideal, it must have often been difficult. But she submitted to her husband’s leadership in the home while softly encouraging him to be a man of God.

The Apostle Peter left timeless principles about the role of women in marriage. He wrote by inspiration: “…ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the Word, they also may without the Word be won by the conversation [or manner of life] of the wives” (I Peter 3:1). The word “subjection” means to subordinate or obey. A married couple should be a team, giving mutual respect and working in harmony. Yet it is God’s design for a wife to submit to her husband’s leadership in the home. This doesn’t mean she is weak. To the contrary, it takes great inner strength for a capable and intelligent woman to take a step back to allow her husband to be the head of the home. Doing so gives her man room to grow and encourages him to be all he can be. Her outer adornments are wonderful IF secondary to adorning herself with the inner qualities of “a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price” (vss. 3-4). The combination of submission to her husband with a quiet spirit, and cultivating genuine inner spiritual strength, makes any woman a real beauty. Moreover, such godliness can win even a stubborn lost mate to Christ as he sees virtues he needs (vs. 2).

Ladies who seek to follow this divine design for marriage are worthy of great respect and admiration. They will find this is the path for maximum marital harmony and godly influence to everyone in their home. If you are a married woman, ask for God’s so strength that your life can be described by these principles.

Silenciando nuestros críticos – I Pedro 2:13-15

(I Pedro 2: 13-14). Honren a todos” (I Pedro 2: 16-17).

Silencia a tus críticos.

Silencing Our Critics – I Peter 2:13-15

When a new girl was hired into the office where my wife, Terri, worked, she reported to a co-worker that Terri had used profanity in front of one of her patients. Without a second of hesitation, the coworker told her: “Oh no she did not. Terri would not say something like that. You must have misunderstood what she said.” That ended the controversy. My wife had demonstrated such a consistent godly testimony before all of the workers in the office that every one of them knew she would not talk or act sinfully.

When Peter wrote to Kingdom believers, they were often under attack by unbelieving Jews. These unsaved men were looking for any opportunity they could find to discredit the lives of Christians and their proclamation of the Lord Jesus Christ. To preserve their testimony, Peter told them: “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors…” (I Peter 2:13-14). Then he added: “For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men” (vs. 15). Refusing to pay taxes or being disrespectful of those in authority would have turned detractors off to listening about Christ. In contrast, if they conducted themselves in real godliness it would silence their critics and give credibility to their faith. Perhaps Peter was even thinking of the example of Daniel. When those who hated him “…sought to find an occasion against Daniel… they could find none occasion nor fault…” (Daniel 6:4). His godliness and “excellent spirit” echoed his faith. Peter wanted his fellow believing Jews to not use their “…liberty as a cloke for maliciousness, but as the servants of God, [to] honor all men” (I Peter 2:16-17). The Apostle Paul was on the exact same page when he urged believers in the Dispensation of Grace to live out their faith in genuine godliness. He instructed young men to maintain “…sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you” (Titus 2:8). A godly life gives unbelievers no ammunition to fire against our testimony or against the truth that eternal life is found in Christ alone, by faith alone. It simply silences the critics.

Dear believer, the lost may reject the gospel when you share it, but they cannot ignore a life transformed into genuine godliness. Silence your critics.

Incluso he estado cultivando vegetales.

Desiring God’s Word – I Peter 2:1-3

The honest truth is that I have a strong aversion to vegetables. On the positive side, I love chocolate, ice cream, and pastry. However, my family tells me the sweets I gravitate toward are actually very bad for my health. Therefore, I recently armed myself with the mindset of a new, healthier diet, finding inventive ways to cook vegetables so that they actually taste good, and I’m eating them every day. I’ve even been juicing vegetables. My family thinks this change is something like a miracle. But in reality, it is a choice of a willing mindset.

When Peter addressed Kingdom saints, he wrote: “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (I Peter 2:2). He knew the only way they would be able to find consistent spiritual victory, or to grow spiritually, was through consistent time in God’s Word. The Lord intended for their faith to be demonstrated in a vibrant, transformed, and satisfying daily walk. In the previous chapter, Peter instructed them not to revert back to sinful habits consistent with life before their salvation. Instead, they were to demonstrate a newness of life by “…laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings” (I Peter 2:1). Only time in God’s Word and a surrendered spirit would empower them to do so. Therefore, Peter urged them to “desire” God’s Word. This would be a choice to willingly embrace a mindset to want to consume the Scriptures as one consumes food. Perhaps Peter had in mind the words of Jeremiah 15:16, which says: “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart…” Peter wanted these saints to crave the Word of God and experience the joy of being spiritually fed in the Scriptures. He also appealed to them to embrace this mindset because “…ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious” (I Peter 2:3). If they wouldn’t choose to love the Scriptures to find victory, perhaps they would by remembering how gracious God had been in giving them eternal salvation, freeing them from eternal punishment.

Dear believer, have you consciously embraced the mindset that you will choose to desire God’s Word and consume it for yourself each day? It’s beneficial, it will taste good to your soul, and it is the only realistic way for you to live a vibrantly transformed life for Christ.

Prepara tu mente – I Pedro 1:13-15
