August Rush is a movie about a young boy without a family. His mother was told her newborn son had died, but, in reality, he was given to an orphanage. He waited and longed for his real parents to come get him so he could have his true family, love, and a place to belong. As a young teen, he even ran away from the orphanage searching for his parents. Through an amazing series of events, both his biological mother and father found him, and were joyously united as a family.

The Apostle Paul informs us: “…ye are sons” (Galatians 4:6). This is amazing because, as Gentiles, we were once alienated from the family of God, His chosen people Israel. We were “…aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12). But in this new Dispensation of Grace, the Heavenly Father has invited us into the family of God by faith in Christ alone. Our condition and position has radically changed. “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts…” (Galatians 4:6). God sought us out in salvation through the sacrifice of His Son and wooed us by the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Then, as sons, He has given us the Holy Spirit to dwell inside us every day. Never again will we be alone. The Holy Spirit is constantly inside us to comfort, guide, strengthen, and direct. We also now have an intimate relationship with God that enables us to speak to Him calling Him “Abba [meaning father] Father” (Galatians 4:6). From the heart, with the deep emotion of gratitude and love, we can call Him our Father and relate to Him all our needs. We have also received “the adoption of sons” (Galatians 4:5). This means that He deals with us, not as small children, but as adult sons with great freedom of choice and standing in grace. He also promises that we are now “an heir of God through Christ” (Galatians 4:7). Not only are we given the riches of grace in salvation, but also great spiritual riches to enjoy now and in eternity.

Dear previously orphaned saint, count it a real privilege, honor, and blessing to be a “son of God,” or one of God’s children. Rejoice in this today and live in such a godly way that it honors the family name of Christ.
