This episode illustrates how, by grace through faith, the indwelling Holy Spirit empowers every believer to live for and serve Christ. In Galatians 5:16, Paul commands the Church to “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh,” using “walk” as a metaphor for the believer’s daily life of steady, step-by-step progress. The Holy Spirit already resides in us as the “temple” of God (1 Cor. 6:19), and walking in Him means continually yielding to His leading, depending on His power by faith, and following His guidance, so that we are carried forward like a train car behind a locomotive. This produces victory over the flesh’s contrary desires and works (Gal. 5:17), freedom from sin’s bondage, and the fruit of the Spirit, enabling us to grow in Christlikeness and glorify Him as we surrender control moment by moment.
