One of the true marks of a friend is that he is there when there is every reason for him not to be, when to be there is sacrificially costly. We learn in this episode that Silas was unwavering as a co-worker of the Apostle Paul through beatings, imprisonment, and persecution. He was a faithful companion on the apostle’s entire second missionary journey, traveling and ministering through Syria, Cilicia, Galatia, Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, and Corinth. Silas proved himself a selfless preacher of the gospel, a man of the Word and prayer, and a true friend who displayed sacrificial love and steadfast loyalty—in the trenches of ministry—rather than seeking his own comfort.
