This episode recounts the story of Naaman, the powerful Syrian army commander who had everything the world could offer—yet was a leper. Pointed to the prophet Elisha to be healed, Naaman arrives with lavish gifts and a letter from the Syrian king, expecting a dramatic, personal healing ceremony, but Elisha simply sends a messenger, instructing Naaman to dip seven times in the muddy Jordan River. Offended by the simplicity of the directions, Naaman’s pride nearly sends him home uncleansed—until he humbles himself and is instantly healed. Leprosy pictures sin in Scripture, and Naaman’s experience shows how pride and self-effort block God’s grace: just as Naaman was cleansed only by simple, obedient faith in God’s word, sinners today are cleansed from sin by faith alone in Christ’s finished work.
