The life of Joseph was filled with detours, as he experienced many unexpected twists and turns—and stopping, waiting, and starting again. God’s sovereign plan for Joseph’s life twice took him from riches to rags and then rags back to riches. To get there, though, Joseph had to travel a road that few of us would have enjoyed or understood. This study shows how Jacob openly favors his 17-year-old son Joseph above his other sons, which produces deep resentment among them. Fueling their hatred are Joseph’s prophetic dreams, which foretell of his brothers’ eventual subservience to him. But through it all, God’s sovereignty becomes fully revealed, using Joseph as a powerful Old Testament picture of Christ.
