Daniel 9 reveals, in the first part of this series, that Israel’s future is structured around 70 “weeks” (490 years), during which God will deal specifically with His people. Daniel discovers from Jeremiah that Israel’s 70 year captivity is nearly complete, but the angel Gabriel arrives to give him a far greater prophecy, leading to the Messiah’s sacrifice and Israel’s eventual Kingdom blessings, and describing God’s plan to end Israel’s sin, provide atonement, bring everlasting righteousness, and fulfill all prophecy. The First Coming of Christ fulfills the atonement aspect, while the remaining promises await His Kingdom, showing that the prophecy spans both the Messiah’s suffering and His future reign.
