This episode recounts the story from Mark 5 in which Jesus, while hurrying through a crowd to heal Jairus’ dying daughter, is interrupted by an anonymous woman who had suffered a debilitating hemorrhage that left her ceremonially unclean, socially ostracized, and financially bankrupt after years of failed medical treatments. In desperate faith, she secretly touches the hem of His garment from behind and is instantly healed; Jesus commends her faith and sends her away in peace. The account draws a parallel to salvation—just as the woman could not heal herself, sinners are spiritually unclean and bankrupt but are made whole instantly by reaching out to Christ alone in faith and then sent forth to live in His peace.

In this episode, we examine Luke 5:1-11, which illustrates moving “from shallow to deep water faith.” After teaching the crowd from Peter’s boat on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus instructed the unsuccessful and exhausted fishermen to launch out into the deep and let down their nets in broad daylight—the very opposite of their professional expertise—resulting in a record-breaking haul. Jesus then called Peter, Andrew, James, and John to become “fishers of men.” The account pictures Christ drawing believers from a shallow, half-hearted commitment into a deeper, wholehearted devotion and dependence on Him, while reminding us as members of the Church to set our affection on things above.

This teaching from Matthew 14:22-33 chronicles how, after feeding the 5,000, Jesus sends His disciples across the Sea of Galilee by boat while He prays alone on a mountain. When a fierce contrary wind arises in the early morning hours, Jesus comes to them walking on the water. Peter boldly asks to come to Jesus, steps out of the boat in faith, and actually walks on the water toward Him—until he sees the boisterous wind, becomes afraid, begins to sink, and cries out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately catches him, they return to the boat, and the wind ceases. This account illustrates that the Christian life can lead us into storms and requires keeping our eyes on Christ, not on our circumstances. It also shows that Christ saves sinking people the moment they call on Him—while prophetically picturing Israel’s remnant in the Tribulation calling out to their Messiah at His Second Coming.
