In this episode, the Tower of Babel is presented as the next major Bible event. After the Flood, Noah’s descendants settled in the plain of Shinar and united in one language to build a city and a towering ziggurat, defiantly refusing God’s command to scatter and fill the earth (Gen. 9:1) in a humanistic, self-glorifying act of pride and unbelief. God then came down, confounded their single language so they could no longer communicate, scattered them across the earth, and halted the tower—explaining the origin of the world’s approximately 7,000 languages and peoples, marking the failure of human government, and setting the stage for God’s call of Abraham to create one nation (Israel) that would bless all families of the earth.
